Debussy prefaced this Prélude with a line from Verlaine: “Le vent dans la plaine suspend son haleine” — “the wind on the plain holds its breath.” True to that image, the piece rarely settles: rapid, hushed repeated notes run through the texture almost continuously, interrupted by sudden gusts and brief moments of stillness. It is one of the more technically demanding of the Préludes — not for its notes, but for the control it asks of a large ensemble playing quickly and quietly together.

This arrangement keeps that balance of restlessness and restraint at the centre. The aim has been to preserve Debussy’s shifting colour and momentum without smoothing it into something more four-square — which means the real test for an ensemble is blend and control at low dynamics, not sheer difficulty of notes.

A useful piece for directors wanting to develop precision and listening within an ensemble, particularly at conservatoire or university level. It rewards rehearsal time spent on dynamic control and internal balance rather than technique alone, and sits well as contrast against bigger, louder repertoire on a programme.

There’s a nervous energy to this piece that comes through even at pianissimo — a sense of something in constant motion just under the surface. Placed well in a programme, it offers a change of pace and texture: quieter than a big finale, but far from static.
