Conducting & Ensemble Building

Directing Coaching • Raising Standards

I held my first paid conducting position at the age of fifteen, leading a Lancashire brass band. From there, I went on to conduct and develop brass bands, wind orchestras, chamber groups, opera companies, choirs, and full symphony orchestras across the UK.

Many years in music education — teaching, leading schools, and developing teachers — inform everything I do on the podium. Working with ensembles is as much about understanding how people learn, what motivates them, and how to bring the best out of a group as it is about musical competence. That combination, I think, is what makes the difference.

My conducting career was interrupted by several years in international education — including time as a school principal in the Middle East and Asia. Returning to the podium recently, I’m focused on the work I find most rewarding: ensemble training, guest conducting, and workshop sessions with amateur and semi-professional groups.

Repertoire

My conducting experience spans a wide range of styles and genres — symphonic, wind and brass, choral, and light opera ranging from Mozart and Beethoven through to major works of the 20th century. Items such as Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Mahler’s First and Fourth Symphonies, Debussy’s Iberia, and Webern’s Concerto Op. 24 give some indication of the repertoire range. Wind and brass experience covers a similarly broad span — from the standard repertoire through to ambitious contemporary works, including several of my own compositions and arrangements.

Recent Work

Recent highlights include concerts in Asia and a recording project with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra.

“Robert Lennon’s conducting of my work was nothing short of exceptional – his commanding presence and deep musical intuition evoked the true essence of every score, guiding the orchestra with precision and passion to create performances that really resonated.” – Jeff Album, composer
