Compositions

My compositions span several decades and a range of forces — from solo piano to large-scale works for wind ensembles, brass, and electronics. The works available here are those currently in digital form; others exist in manuscript or earlier formats and will be added as they become available.

The three works below reflect a consistent preoccupation with the relationship between acoustic and electronic sound — and with the idea, explored at length in the Pythagoras & the Music of the Future series, that every element of a musical work can be derived from a single acoustical source.

Klee Connections for Piano (composed 2013) A post-tonal work exploring both the percussive and lyrical qualities of the piano — in which connections between superimposed rhythmic and harmonic figurations give rise to configurations that are sometimes deliberate, sometimes coincidental, and occasionally both at once.

Risonanze for Clarinet & Electronics (composed 2016) A work in which every sound — including the electronic element — is derived from the sound of a single clarinet, transformed through delay, pitch-shifting, freeze reverb, and granular synthesis into a continuously evolving sound world.

Songs of the Aristos (2014) For two wind ensembles, two pianos, and electronics. A radical re-working of Songs of the Aristos for two Brass Groups and Electronic Tape, composed in 1985. The spatial opposition of two wind groups, located at opposite ends of the auditorium, of the speakers issuing the electronic sounds, and of two pianos each place at either side of the hall is central to the work’s conception as is the seeming opposition of harmonic timbres, emitted by wind instruments, and inharmonic which ar electronically generated.

Performing These Works

All three works are available to performers — professional, semi-professional, or institutional — who are looking for serious contemporary repertoire. The scores and parts are free to download; I am happy to discuss performance materials, technical requirements, and any questions about the works directly. So please contact me for an informal discussion without obligation.

Songs of the Aristos in particular represents a significant but rewarding undertaking for a university, conservatoire, or professional ensembles with the resources to realise its spatial and electronic requirements. The score is available to performers and ensembles on request. If you would like to explore the possibility of a performance, please get in touch — I would welcome the conversation.
